And happy Star Wars day! This is my second newsletter where I share news about writings, events, software, and creative work. You can see the previous newsletter here - yes I backed it up manually because convertkit (the mailing system I am using for now) breaks formatting on its own built-in archive. Feel free to share this with anyone who might be interested in signing up.
WRITING
Adventures in Quantumland
The dissertation project that started it all, Adventures in Quantumland, available online since September 2021, has passed 1000 views and 400 downloads. Since its release it has held a consistent average of 50 accesses and 20 downloads per month. This is the work that introduced the concepts of QAC and QAD, explored the implications of Quantum Computing for new modes of artistic creation, and unveiled the The QAC Toolkit.
EVENTS
4 Disklavier Preludes at NIME 2023
The work 4 Disklavier Preludes, originally presented in The Gedanken Room (2021), will be played at the New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME) conference. This year, NIME will take place in Mexico between May 31 and June 3. Música Analítica 2023
I am serving on the Scientific Board for the Música Analítica 2023 conference. The second edition of this international conference is organized and hosted by the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies at University of Coimbra. The conference focus is on Interdisciplinary Approaches to Musical Time, in its multiple meanings and relations to phenomena, its diversity in history and culture, and its many experiential modes. The call for proposals is open until the 20th of May, at 11:59pm (WEST), and it welcomes proposals from various fields, including: musicology, philosophy, anthropology, neuroscience, and computer science.
SOFTWARE
och.score
A couple of weeks ago, I realized that there is no simple way in Max to display note sequences in staff notation. The nslider object, as the name suggests, only displays one note or chord at a time that can slide vertically. So, I decided to give it a try to build a simple abstraction object that draws note sequences in a musical staff, and can also highlight one of those notes, like kslider. You can see it in action on youtube. Admittedly, my youtube channel is also in its an early days, so I decided to share an early access to this object to everyone that subscribes to the YT channel and fills out the automatic form on the button below.
Me and my quantum computing colleague, Scott Oshiro, will be introducing a new creative duo called NpHz. This is a duo that focuses on music with quantum computing, and features new experimental work pursued by each of us in our research and creative practice.
Bandcamp Friday
Once a month, or at least for most months in the year, bandcamp, the online music distribution platform where I've started releasing albums, hosts a Bandcamp Friday. This is a special day where they waive their revenue share, meaning more money goes to the artists. It is a great day to show support to your favorite and upcoming artists. The next Bandcamp Friday is... tomorrow, May 5th, 2023.
