Coming out a bit later in this month of July, my next newsletter brings back some news in 4 categories: events, software, creative work, and awards. As always, you can see the previous newsletters backed up here. And feel free to share this with anyone who might be interested in signing up.
AWARDS
Falling Walls Science Breakthroughs!
After being nominated and submitting some information about my work, I was now selected as a finalist for the Falling Walls Science Breakthroughs of 2023 in Art & Science! Charged with the world-changing energy that broke through the Berlin Wall in 1989, the Falling Walls Foundation is dedicated to identify and celebrate the Science Breakthroughs globally, across borders and disciplines. I am being recognized for breaking the wall to Quantum Computer Music.
EVENTS
9th Young Researchers Meeting
I was recently invited for a round table at the 9th Young Researchers Meeting to talk about Researching in the 21st century. I was sharing the table with Ana Lúcia Santos, from Center for Social Studies, in a session moderated by Prof. Carolina Coelho, from the Architecture Department. It was a nice opportunity to interact with other young researchers and discuss what it means to be a researcher in Portugal today.
MCM 2024
I am serving as Scientific Program Chair / Co-Editor for the 9th International Congress on Mathematics and Computation in Music (MCM2024). This is an historical conference focused on mathematical and/or computational approaches to music theory, music analysis, composition, and performance, and next year it is taking place in Coimbra, PT. There is a call for papers open until January 15, 2024.
ISQCMC Berlin (new deadline)
The second edition of the International Symposium on Quantum Computing and Musical Creativity had its deadline extended until July 15th. Besides paper contributions, it is also accepting music performance proposals! The paper presentations of ISQCMC Berlin will take place at Intercontinental Berlin in October 5 and 6, and the music performances' venue will soon be announced.
SOFTWARE
SOC-Qasm powering Q1 Synth
SOC-Qasm, a spinoff version of OSC-Qasm that I developed around the same time, is being used to power the new online version of Q1 Synth. This is a music synthesizer instrument developed by Cephas Teom as a commission from Moth Quantum (a new child company of Quantinuum promoting audio visual QC applications?). Q1 Synth derives its parameters from the state of a 1 qubit system. SOC-Qasm is being used in the backend to actually simulate that quantum state and/or send it to real hardware.
CREATIVE WORK
Jupiter meets Saturn (2023)
I am very excited to share my latest album with STArt. After some time in the making, it was finally released on Bandcamp this past July the 5th, also marking the 1 year anniversary of this duo. Jupiter meets Saturn is a music and painting album that journeys the listener on a sonic canvas cosmos. Recorded under the moonlight and immersed in the fragrance of night blooming jasmine it offers "a nourishing sanctuary for your senses". It includes 3 tracks on side A (Venus' Embrace, Jupiter's Vision, and Saturn's Touch), and a side B with audio visual guided meditations. A Making Of video will soon be released on youtube, and prints of the artworks will also be available.
